{"id":2468,"date":"2017-08-01T15:16:26","date_gmt":"2017-08-01T15:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/somalicentral.com\/news\/?p=2468"},"modified":"2017-08-01T15:16:26","modified_gmt":"2017-08-01T15:16:26","slug":"somaliland-secures-record-442m-foreign-investment-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/somalicentral.com\/news\/somaliland-secures-record-442m-foreign-investment-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Somaliland secures record $442m foreign investment deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Berbera port development will boost international standing<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The unrecognized nation of Somaliland, a semi-autonomous region of Somalia, has secured its largest ever foreign investment deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dubai-based development firm DP World will pump <a href=\"https:\/\/theloadstar.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016_09_05_Somaliland_Concession_EN.pdf\"><span class=\"s2\">$442 million<\/span><\/a> into transforming the country&#8217;s Berbera Port on the Gulf of Aden, with the ambition of creating a regional trade hub.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">DP World has committed to managing the port for 30 years. The international community has prioritized the development of Somalia as a united country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The deal with DP World represents a major coup for Somaliland as it demonstrates the country&#8217;s clout on the world stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The investment is timely. Somaliland is blighted by youth unemployment of over 60%, and its worst drought in years has affected 1.5 million people &#8211; over 30% of the population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The development divides opinion among the local population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jama Jusse Jama, the director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hargeysaculturalcenter.org\/wphcc\/about-us\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Red Sea Cultural Association<\/span><\/a> in Somaliland&#8217;s capital Hargeisa, believes the project will create opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Berbera Port is extremely fundamental for Somaliland,&#8221; he told CNN. &#8220;(This investment) will boost the connection with the rest of Africa, especially Ethiopia. It&#8217;s too early to say it&#8217;s all positive, but I am confident it&#8217;s a step forward.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But there are fears that land around the site will be bought up by wealthy businessmen at the expense of the wider population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;The makeup of Berbera will definitely change,&#8221; Mohamed Aden Hassan, head of local news channel StarTV, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-somaliland-landrights-port-idUSKBN1781LD\"><span class=\"s2\">told Reuters<\/span><\/a>. &#8220;It is already showing signs of becoming an increasingly exclusive club.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2471\" style=\"width: 790px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/somalicentral.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/08\/sl3.jpg\" data-rel=\"pop-gallery-TL6wDOBP\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2471\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2471\" src=\"http:\/\/somalicentral.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/08\/sl3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/somalicentral.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/08\/sl3.jpg 780w, http:\/\/somalicentral.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/08\/sl3-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/somalicentral.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/08\/sl3-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The port development could improve Somaliland&#8217;s international standing.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Strategic location<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">DP World&#8217;s interest in this little-known fishing town is largely explained by its location, sitting conveniently at the apex of trade routes in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and East Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;The Horn of Africa is a fast growing region with some of the fastest growing economies in the world,&#8221; says DP World CEO Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem. &#8220;DP World Berbera builds on growth in the region where we are enabling trade.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The location also offers opportunities to landlocked Ethiopia, which is heavily reliant on neighboring Djibouti, with 90% of trade passing through the tiny state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ethiopia currently imports limited quantities of food through Berbera, but the imminent development will allow it to vastly scale up traffic through the port.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Somaliland government claims it has an agreement for Ethiopia to take a 19% share of the port, which should deliver mutual benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Ethiopia having access to the sea is a major deal for Somaliland, and Ethiopia,&#8221; says Laura Hammond, an East Africa specialist at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Ethiopia has already built a road up to the border with Somaliland basically advertizing the fact that they&#8217;re waiting to do business.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For its part, Somaliland will gain a powerful partner and ally.
